Chromatographic Chiral Separations.

Chromatographic Chiral Separations (Chromatographic Science Series/40) Edited by Morris Zief and Laura J. Crane (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 270 Madison Avenue, New York 10016, 1987. 410 pp. US$99.75). In this volume various topics of liquid chromatography chiral separations are discussed. Everyone currently using this type of separation will find many of 14 chapters incomplete (as far as literature is cited) and confusing to a novice in the field searching for practical examples.

As a significant drawback in this book, in the opinion of this reviewer, that gas chromatographic separations would deserve at least one chapter with an appropriate treatment of basic principles and presentation of some of many outstanding separation examples, especially using open tubular columns coated with novel chiral stationary phases. It should be considered as a serious ignorance by editors of this volume that they did not pay attention to this rapidly growing area of separating enantiomers in gaseous phase.

Overall, the content of this volume may be characterized by an easy to survey presentation, so that this becomes a valuable and easy accessible first source of information. There are some excellent chapters in this volume but that is not enough to consider it as an important contribution in the field of chiral separations.
