THE pretty village of Whickham in Gateshead has always been a popular choice for Christmas shoppers looking for something a little different from the norm. Born in Rowlands Gill, Phil studied sports science at university and spent the last 19 years teaching in Farnham, Surrey, before returning to the North East to focus on this new venture.

As a former junior county tennis player for Durham & Cleveland and a current member of Blaydon Tennis club, Phil will be specialising in tennis, while also offering a wide variety of sports equipment, footwear and clothing at competitive prices.

Located at 39 Front Street, PJP Sport is easily accessible with free parking behind St Mary's Green Shopping Centre. WHICKHAM SALEROOMS: Whickham Salerooms, in Back Row, Whickham, has been established since 1969. The business offers a wide selection of carpets, vinyl, rugs and underlay including Cloud 9. Measuring and fitting services are available. It also has a section offering a wide range of greeting cards, calendars, 2011 diaries, gift wrap, bows, gifts and more. There is a second branch at Stanley Market Hall Carpet Centre, Station Road, Stanley.

THE DOOR EXCHANGE: Specialising in kitchen and bedroom makeovers, The Door Exchange supplies kitchen doors, worktops, bespoke cabinets, sinks and taps. It also sells worktops, appliances, and complete bedrooms. The business was recently featured on 60-minute makeover.

R MARTIN & SON: R.Martin & Son has been established since 1946. Located in St. Mary's Green, Whickham, the butcher offers beef and lamb which is supplied from South Farm, Ryal, in Northumberland. Try its delicious home-cooked pies and home-cooked meats. Orders are now being taken for Christmas.

THE CONFESSIONAL HAIR SALON: The Confessional Hair Salon has recently launched its flagship salon in the heart of Whickham. Mixing a city centre vibe and talent, with a local, friendly atmosphere, the salon offers skilled stylists in fabulous surroundings.

The opulent salon features ornate French decor with huge mirrors suspended from the ceiling. While you relax, you can choose from a choice of drinks and accompaniments offering a real coffee shop vibe.

FLOWER DESIGN LTD: Flower Design has been part of Whickham Community for 15 years, providing a very high standard of excellence within their work, creating beautiful and elegant designs for any occasion.

Our passion for flowers has helped us to maintain an excellent reputation within the area. LG COFFEE BAR: Linda Goodrick has been running LG Coffee bar in Church Chare, Whickham for 14 years. It serves delicious homemade food, scones and sandwiches. Linda now has an extended coffee bar selling a range of gifts and jewellery, pictures, candles, pots, wall hangings, vases and much more. Christmas orders now being taken for raspberry and hazelnut meringue and quiches.
