Christine shows her strength.

CHRISTINE Lichfield and her family have been dealt more than enough blows in life.

Her 17-year-old son, Ben, was born with complex health problems.

At the age of two he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and over the years he has had to endure hours of surgery, including operations on his eyes and ears and major surgery on his skull.

Christine, together with husband, Bill, had the difficult task of supporting Ben through his treatment while continuing to support their other son David, now 25, through his education.

The family were then dealt another blow when Bill was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and had to leave his job.

Christine became a full-time carer for both her husband and son despite being diagnosed herself with fibromyalgia which causes pain in her shoulders and extreme tiredness.

Helped by the love and support of Christine, as well as the rest of the family, Ben has been able to achieve a great deal, even though he has spent much time in and out of hospital.

He is currently taking his GCSEs and has been accepted at Huddersfield New College.

Christine then fell seriously ill late last year and she was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent major surgery and then chemotherapy treatment and happily was given the all-clear three weeks ago.

Despite everything she and her family have been through, Christine has still found the strength to care for and support them as much as ever before.

Susan Brook said that Christine thoroughly deserves a Carer of the Year award for the courage that she has shown over the years. She said: "After overcoming major surgery and chemotherapy for cancer, Christine still manages to care for her husband and son."

Christine said she was delighted to be nominated for the award
