The Ministry of Information Industry in China has reported that China had a total of 377m mobile phone subscribers at the end of September 2005.

The figures equate to an average 29 mobile phones per 100 people and China's mobile phone market, which became the world's largest in August 2003 with 250m users, is continuing to grow. The September figures represent a 7.7% increase from June's 350m mobile phone subscribers and a 23.6% increase from the 305m mobile subscribers in June 2004.

The number of SMS sent by mobile devices in China in September increased 40.2% over a year earlier, to 218.5bn and the number of fixed line telephones also increased to 345m by the end of September.
