China has successfully sent a French-made communications satellite into space.

The Chinasat 12 was operating normally after it was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 6.13pm on Tuesday.

It reached a preset orbit with no hitches, according to a monitoring center based in Xi'an.

The satellite will provide telecommunications services for customers in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Manufactured by France's Thales Alenia Space company, Chinasat 12 was launched by a Chinese Long March-3B carrier rocket.

It was the 173rd launch mission for the Long March series of carrier rockets.

The Long March-3B was developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.
