Motorists in Shenyang City in northeast China have had to run to cover due to a hailstorm.

Giant hail stones rained down for more than half an hour causing extensive damage to both houses and vehicles, shattering windscreens and breaking windows.

One local resident described the damage to his car.

"I was having supper at that time. When I heard the noise I came out, only to find my car badly damaged. But I didn't dare to get any closer to check on it until the hailstorm was over. The hail stone was as big as a rice bowl", he said.

The hailstorm also caused a blackout for traffic lights and street lamps as well as delaying flights at the local airport.
