TELECOMWORLDWIRE-15 February 2005-China Unicom purchases a further 6.4m Openwave Mobile Access Gateway licenses(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Chinese telecomms provider, China Unicom (NASDAQ: CHU), has purchased a further 6.4m Openwave Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) licenses from telecomms open software products and services provider, Openwave (NASDAQ: OPWV).

The Chinese company has also upgraded its entire subscriber base to MAG 6, which is a WAP 2 compliant gateway, enabling it to scale to the demands for current and legacy handsets and new rich content. Openwave said that to date China Unicom has purchased 11.4m MAG licenses since the initial trial of the Unicom Unlimited service in 2002.

A spokesperson for China Unicom said that WAP services have become a hallmark of its business due to the demand from subscribers, and that over the years Openwave has proven that it has the technology and expertise to develop mobile data applications that enrich the user experience and add real value to our subscribers. No financial information was released.
