China,Romania : ZTE wins project contract from COSMOTE ROMANIA to transform network and boost coverage.
The Chinese ZTE has secured a project deal from Cosmote Romania to transform its current 2G/3G network and boost the Greek-owned telco's 4G LTE network coverage across southern Romania with a new radio access infrastructure deployment.
The deal would require the company to build over 3,000 base stations.
Cosmote Romania introduced commercial LTE services in April last year in the 1800MHz band, attaining 4G coverage of over 40% of the urban population of the country across 20 cities (including more than 90% of capital Bucharest) by July this year.
Cosmote is eyeing 80% urban population coverage in 160 towns/cities by the year-end.
The carrier secured further 1800MHz, 2600MHz, 800MHz and 900MHz spectrum in 2012 which all became valid in April this year.
ZTE said earlier partnership with Cosmote Romania on 3G UMTS networks has laid a strong foundation for further work on LTE projects.
The Chinese company concluded a W-CDMA/HSPA+ rollout project for Cosmote using SDR (software defined radio) technologies in April 2010.
