Child Trust Fund top-ups; VIEWPOINTS.
AS PART of our efforts to tackle child poverty, the Welsh Assembly Government is offering every child in Year 1 a pounds 50 top-up to their Child Trust Fund account.
An additional pounds 50 will be offered to those children from lowincome families.
This month, a Child Trust Fund Cymru information booklet and claim form will be posted to the households of every eligible child in Cardiff. These are children born between September 1, 2004, and August 31, 2005, who were living in Wales on September 15 2010.
Parents and carers will be asked to complete and return the claim form to the Welsh Assembly Government by January 31, 2011, in order to claim their child's Trust Fund top up.
Earlier this year the UK Coalition Government made a decision to end the National Child Trust Fund scheme. Inevitably this announcement does have a knock-on effect on what we can do in Wales. However, I am keen to reassure parents that payments from the Child Trust Fund Cymru will continue this autumn.
The Welsh Assembly Government is doing everything it can to explore ways in which our existing investment in setting up Child Trust Funds Cymru can be protected to maintain our commitment to Wales' children.
There is a wide range of help and support available to make completing the form easier. Calling 0800 496 0590, or you can go to the Child Trust Fund Cymru website www.wales.gov.uk/child trustfundcymru The helpline is there to help you, so please call if you have any questions.
