Chew over the sweetest things to say; RETRO REPORT How we covered... February, 2003.

Byline: Edited by Tony Woolway

FOR more than 50 years, children have crunched their way through sweet nothings such as Be Mine and Say Yes. Now Love Hearts, a tube of sugary sayings that have become a mainstay of school romance, are adding 10 new messages to their range in time for Valentine's Day.

Traditional sayings will be joined by 21st century text-message-style declarations such as I Luv U 24/7 and the less romantic Homer Simpson catchphrase Doh!

The new messages were chosen after an internet poll by manufacturers Swizzels Matlow with one slogan chosen from each region of the UK.

In Scotland it was Bonnie Lass, in London it was Flirty Minx and in Wales it was Cheeky Girl and Cheeky Boy.

Swizzels Matlow asked, "What would you put on a Love Heart?" in the online poll and received thousands of suggestions.

Some were considered too rude to use, including Kinky, Nice Bum, Sex Bomb, Horny Devil and Bootylicious.

Love Hearts spokesman Andrew Matlow said: "We wanted to invite sweet lovers to tell us what they would like to see in the future - and the nation has done us proud.

"The messages chosen are cute, fun and playful - perfect for Love Hearts - and just right for Valentine's Day."

To add a little cultural gravitas which Love Hearts currently lack, Emma Lile, assistant curator at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans, near Cardiff, was asked for some of the more traditional Welsh language sayings that might have appeared in romantic Celtic correspondence.

Her suggestions included Sws, the word for kiss in Welsh and Cwtsio Lan, meaning cuddle up.
