Chemical dumped at station.

AN investigation is under way after a bag containing a "corrosive" substance was left at a train station.

British Transport Police (BTP) said a man fled after leaving the bag under a bench at Kingston train station, in Surrey, at about 4.50pm yesterday.

The BTP spokesman said a substance seen leaking out across the station forecourt burnt a hole in the shoe of a passer-by.

"A man left a bag under a bench near to a cafe at the station," said the spokesman. "Fumes were seen coming from the bag. He was challenged about it by railway staff but left the area and police were called."

He said closed circuit television footage was being studied in a bid to locate the man.
