Cheats caught in dole probes.

A CHEAT who pocketed more than pounds 4,000 in benefit was fined and ordered to repay the money. Christopher Mutumbwa, 39, of Windsor Avenue, Bensham, Gateshead, but now living in Hartlepool, lied about being out of work in order to claim housing benefit, council tax and job seekers allowance.

But a probe by benefits officers from Gateshead Council, found he had started working and failed to inform the authorities.

Mutumbwa pleaded guilty at the town's Magistrates' Court to dishonestly failing to notify a change in circumstances. He had claimed pounds 2,780.76 in housing benefit, pounds 497.81 in council tax benefit and pounds 794.30 in job seekers allowance.

He was handed a pounds 155 fine and ordered to pay pounds 100 in court costs.

In a separate case, Michelle Locker, 30, of Coronation Road, Sunniside, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to dishonestly making a false statement and failing to report a change in circumstances.

She claimed to be single and not working when she applied for benefits, but was living with her partner She admitted living with her partner and being overpaid almost pounds 4,500. She was given a 12-month community order and ordered to pay back the cash.
