Cheap option?

Referring to the article "Leaking roof at Bahrain mall" (GDN January 7), my personal opinion is that the original material of some sort of canvas to cover the roof that was damaged during a fire and wind was inappropriate.

It seems that the Bahrain Mall management has committed the same mistake of ordering to replace it with the original material. The material is some kind of canvas and it is not advisable to use this kind of material due to fire hazard and other harsh climate conditions as the case proved when the combined action of fire and wind damaged the canvas.

It would have been more advisable and practical if Bahrain Mall management decided to employ an engineering office to design the roof with glass and aluminium and allow some features in the aluminium sections to be incorporated to open automatically during fire. The design of aluminium and glass is better and more durable than canvas and it will also allow natural daylight to enter the mall.
