Charmer in the early days.

IN the late 50s and early 60s, Richard cut a dash as suave heart-throb Dr John Rennie in Emergency Ward 10.

In those days soaps were broadcast live and Richard says it lead to some medical mishaps.

``On one occasion Glyn Owen, who played Patrick O'Meara, and my character were having a hell of a row marching through hospital and through the swinging doors.

``We slammed the doors and the whole set fell down!

Three-times married Richard, who has four grownup children, says if you saw a vintage clip of Emergency Ward 10 today you wouldn't recognise him at all. ``I know it's hard to believe but back then, in the late 50s and 60s, I was a handsome man.

``In fact, when I was on This Is Your Life five or six years ago my daughter Kate, who's now 30, saw me and couldn't believe it. She said: `I would have fancied you then, dad!'''
