Charles F. Fidler, 81.

WORCESTER Charles F. Fidler, 81, of 74 Litchfield Avenue, Southbridge passed away on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007 at St. Vincent's Hospital at the Worcester Medical Center at 11:00 AM. He was born in Boston on November 4, 1925. He was the son of the late Charles and Helen Fidler of Boston, and brother of the late William Fidler, Edith Corcoran, and Mary Fidler. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lenore Fidler of Milton and his brother-in-law, Robert Corcoran, also of Milton, as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, many cousins, and by his monastic family at St. Joseph's Abbey.

After some years with the Paulist Fathers, Charles entered the Cistercian monastery of Our Lady of the Valley in Valley Falls, Rhode Island on November 1, 1949 and made his first profession on February 25, 1951. After the disastrous fire that destroyed the monastery on April 21, 1950, the community was transferred to its new home at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer on December 23rd. Charles was ordained priest there on June 7, 1954. He was an outstanding preacher and writer and was much admired for his art work. In 1964, he was afflicted with a debilitating illness that made it necessary for him to live outside the monastery. The last years of Charles's life were spent in a dynamic community where he was able to share his gifts with others in a loving atmosphere of mutual support. Since 2004, he has brought joy to the abbey itself with his Christmas and Easter visits. This year the Risen Lord came for him as he was waiting for his ride to the abbey for his 2007 Easter visit.

Charles's funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 11th at St. Joseph's Abbey, 167 N Spencer Rd., Spencer with a Mass of Christian burial at 2:30 PM in the abbey church.

J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terrace, Spencer, is directing arrangements.
