Channels battle it out for best TVTs.

IT CANNOT get any better than this for couch potatoes.

With several big television shows running on various channels simultaneously, the Indian audience is spoilt for choice. All eyes are set on the small screen also because a number of shows featuring big stars have gone on air in the last few weeks.

The war between various General Entertainment Channels ( GECs) reached its peak, with the launch of new shows such as Mahabharat on Star Plus, Kaun Banega Crorepati 7 on Sony and Bigg Boss 7 on Colors.

The Television Audience Measurement ( TAM) ratings of week 38, which saw the launch of two big shows -- Mahabharat and Bigg Boss 7 -- has elevated the audience's interest.

Star Plus' magnum opus Mahabharat, received an epic start. With 8,445 TVTs for the opening episode, it has become the highest rated weekday fiction show in the last three years on Indian television.

The average 6,356 TVTs in its opening week has helped the channel add 58 million TVTs in Week 38.

The success of Swastik Productions Mahabharat, has confirmed that mythological shows are the flavour of the season. High TVTs confirm that it has left behind two prominent reality shows hosted by superstars Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Color's reality show Bigg Boss 7 opened at 7,711 TVTs on Sunday premiere night and averaged 5,080 TVTs from Monday to Sunday.

The seventh season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, which opened on September 6, gathered 8,950 TVTs on Friday and 8,460 TVTs on Saturday. It has seen a dip in its popularity with the advent of various new shows.

KBC 7 has pulled 6,134 TVTs in the subsequent weekends and is facing tough competition from Bigg Boss 7. This is largely because the airing time of weekend special episode of Bigg Boss 7 featuring Salman Khan clashes with that of KBC . The episode based on Delhi gang rape case on Sony's crime thriller show Crime Patrol hosted by Anoop Soni received a huge response and helped the channel regain its Number 4 position. The two episodes based on the December 16 gangrape had garnered 6,415 TVTs.

Backed by Mahabharat and improved performances by almost all of its fiction shows, Star Plus added 58 million TVTs in Week 38 while Colors added 16 million TVTs because of shows like Bigg Boss and Comedy Nights with Kapil.

Zee TV's fiction shows led by Jodha Akbar helped the channel add 15 million TVTs this week.

Television Viewership In Thousands ( TVT) is the new rating to measure television viewership which has replaced Total Rating Points ( TRP).

The changes were made by the Indian Broadcasting Federation after a row over releasing television viewership data. The TV channels, advertisers and data gathering agency TAM decided to adopt a new method in place of TRP, in July and make public the television ratings in absolute numbers instead of percentage points.

The rolling average is said to be statistically more stable data on viewership.
