Change of command ceremony held.

Cmdr. Nathan Johnston relieved Cmdr. Joseph Davis as Commanding Officer, Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 1 (NCHB-1) during a change of command ceremony held at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, May 17.

NCHB 1 is a component of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG).

"I am honored to become the 30th commanding officer of Navy Cargo Handling Battalion ONE. It is very humbling to follow in the footsteps of the fine officers who have held this position and is particularly special to relieve one of my long time mentors, Capt. (Select) Joe Davis," Cmdr. Johnston said. "We here at NCHB 1 will maintain the standard that he and his predecessors set, and stand ever ready to respond as the Navy's 911 Cargo Operators."

Cmdr. Johnston last served as Director of Logistics and Expeditionary Support at NAVELSG. A native of Bogalusa, La., he received his commission after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1997, and later earned a master's degree in Business Administration, Financial Management from the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif.

He has served as a Disbursing/Sales Officer aboard USS Vandegrift (FFG 48); Officer in Charge, Surface Company Delta, Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 9; and Training Officer at Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 1. His duties ashore include serving as Supply Officer at Surface Warfare Officers School Command, and Operations and Maintenance Navy Reserve Budget Director at Navy Reserve Forces Command.

"The future will offer challenges and opportunities for NCHB 1," Cmdr. Davis explained. "The nation is at a crossroads with respect to its financial and military priorities. What will not change is the requirement for NCHB 1 to be ready when called. I am excited to have been relieved by Cmdr. Nathan Johnston. He is a man of high character, and I'm sure he will lead NCHB 1 to new heights of performance."

"We are 'One Team, One Focus'--diverse elements bound by a common mission to bring the best expeditionary logistics support to joint warfighters in forward areas," said Rear Adm. Mark Belton, Commander, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group. "This requires constant attention to readiness as well as retention of the best talent we have."

NCHB-1 is the active duty, rapid deployable battalion of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG). NAVELSG delivers expeditionary logistics capabilities with mobilization-ready Navy Reserve Forces and active duty Sailors. NAVELSG provides a wide-range of supply and transportation functions critical for peacekeeping, crisis response, humanitarian, and combat service support missions.

NAVELSG is part of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, a global force provider of adaptive force packages of expeditionary capabilities to joint warfighting commanders.
