Chance to reassert control.
BAS Gunn is spot on in saying "most people are missing the real point" about the referendum (Feedback, 04.03.16). The debate should not centre on the economy, or even immigration. It is about whether we want to rule ourselves, or hand control of our affairs to others.
Britain is the home of democracy but gradually we have been surrendering sovereignty to Brussels. No matter what David Cameron says, we are being inexorably drawn into "ever closer union".
Britain fought two world wars to preserve democracy and national self-determination. Are we meekly to vote our independence away in the vain hope that, inside Europe, we'll have a little more dosh in our pockets? What has happened to our national pride and self-esteem? As far as regaining our hard-won liberties is concerned, we are in the Last Chance Saloon. The referendum is our final opportunity to reassert control over our own affairs and win back our historic role as the flagship of self-rule and democracy.
