Certification corner summer 2007.

Recently I have shared some stories about the experiences of other certified nurses. Now I'd like to share mine. I just renewed my Certification in Nursing Administration which I first received in 1991. It doesn't seem possible that it has been that long. I can still remember how nervous I was waiting for those test results, nearly convinced that I had failed the exam. I also remember how excited I was when I read the word "passed" in the official letter. It was the same feeling I had when I successfully completed my Boards years earlier.

During the years since, my nursing roles and positions have changed several times. I've been a staffing specialist, educator, education manager, and now an accreditation specialist. Through all the transitions, there was one constant--my certification. Each of my positions was different, and I used my certification expertise in all of them.

Along the way, I decided to become more active in the American Nurses Association and volunteered at local, state, and national levels in continuing education activities, certification activities, and as a Magnet appraiser. This July, I will become the Chair of the Content Expert Panel for the Nursing Administration Certification Examination--the same test I was so excited to pass in 1991.

Why am I sharing this with you? I want to encourage you to get that certification and get involved in your professional organization. It's really not hard to do--just sign up when the Call for Volunteers goes out. I won't lie to you. Yes, it does take time and there is work and some travel involved, but nothing worthwhile is achieved without some effort. The certification is worth the effort, and the satisfaction from making a difference in our profession is worth the commitment. Give it a try! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

(If you have a certification story to share, email it to Sue.Johnson@Parkview.com and I will be glad to publish your comments.)
