A SMALL Heath student who was on the verge of quitting her studies was today praising a city charity who gave her a cash boost to continue her eduction.

Farzana Hussain, aged 20, was speaking to city bosses this afternoon on behalf of Second City Second Chance (SCSC) at the Mentoring, Employment and New Demographic conference in Col more Row.

SCSC was formed in 1996 to combat economic and social exclusion and is a partner organisation in the Birmingham Mentoring Consortium (BMC).

Ms Hussain was given a pounds 1,500 bursary last December which helped her to continue her Product Design and Management degree at Aston University.

She said: "The bursary was a great help as it was very stressful trying to make ends meet financially and pay proper attention to my studies.

"Many school students are not looking far enough ahead to consider going to university."

Ms Hussain's now works as a mentor for SCSC.

Her presentation was one of several by SCSC mentors during the event, which was including updates from sponsors Vodafone, the universities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
