Centex-Moseley LLC Awarded Contract to Build Three Correctional Facilities.

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The design-build team of Centex-Moseley LLC has been awarded a contract to provide preconstruction and construction services for three correctional facilities. The contract, awarded by the Virginia Department of Corrections via the Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002 (PPEA), will be designed by Moseley Architects, PC. The three facilities will be constructed by Centex Construction on sites in Tazewell, Pittsylvania and Southampton counties.

Tazewell County, Va.:

The Tazewell Correctional Facility will contain 260,000 square feet of space. The estimated $61 million design-build project will contain a total of eight buildings. Four buildings will house prisoners, double-bunked to accommodate 1,024 inmates. The remaining four buildings will house administration, program support (food service, medical, education, gym, visitation); a gate house; and a warehouse maintenance facility. This level-three, medium security state detention facility is slated for completion in spring 2007.

Pittsylvania County, Va.:

Similar to the Tazewell Correctional Facility, the Pittsylvania design-build project will contain 260,000 square feet of space among eight buildings. The Pittsylvania project also will include provisions for wastewater treatment facilities. This level-three security detention facility has a construction value of $66 million and is scheduled for completion in spring 2007.

Southampton County, Va.:

Centex's scope of work for the Southampton Correctional Facility includes a 600-bed addition to an existing prison, plus an expansion to the administration office, food service, education and visitation areas. Also, a new 20-bed medical facility to accommodate aging prisoners will be built. This project will be a level-three security state detention facility and will have a 200-inmate capacity. This design-build project has a construction value of more than $18 million and is slated for completion in November 2006.

The PPEA, which was modeled after the Virginia Public-Private Transportation Act of 1995 (PPTA), was passed by the 2002 General Assembly. It allows all public entities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia to create public-private partnerships to develop a wide variety of projects, such as jails and schools, for public use.
