Census Bureau releases subcounty population estimates.

The U.S. Census Bureau released July 1, 2007 subcounty population estimates on July 10, 2008.

South Dakota

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Harrisburg had the highest growth rate from 2006 to 2007 for cities with a population of 1,000 or more. It grew at a rate of 34.2% followed by Mission (27.3%), Tea (11.3%), Box Elder (5.3%) and Hartford (4.4%).

Sioux Falls experienced the largest numeric growth with an increase of 3,261 persons, followed by Harrisburg (1,110), Rapid City (973), Tea (401), and Brandon (261).

Sioux Falls continues to be the most populous city in South Dakota with a population of 151,505, followed by Rapid City (63,997), Aberdeen (24,410), Watertown (20,530), and Brookings (19,463).

South Dakota has 309 cities. Its newest city, Summerset, located in Meade County, was incorporated in 2005. The cities of Sioux Falls and Rapid City, the only two cities in South Dakota with a population of 50,000 or more, made up 27 percent of South Dakota's total population in 2007. Sixty-one percent of South Dakota's cities have a population of 500 or less.
