Cellular One Activates New Fraud Prevention System for Digital and Analog Customers; "RF Fingerprinting" Technology to Drastically Reduce Fraud on Wireless Phones.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1996--Cellular One, the leading wireless communications provider in the Greater Bay Area, today announced that it is now using a new fraud prevention system to further protect its digital and analog customers from cloning fraud.

Cellular One is using the Blackbird Platform and PreTect Software from Cellular Technical Services Company, Inc (CTS). Cellular One is the first wireless communications carrier in the Greater Bay Area to activate such an advanced system.

Fraud occurs when a legitimate customers phone number and Electronic Serial Number (ESN) are captured while they are being transmitted over the wireless network and are then reprogrammed into another phone. Based on technology called Radio Frequency (RF) Fingerprinting, the system from CTS enables the Cellular One network to accurately distinguish between legitimate customers and counterfeit users before a call is even connected.

Each cellular phone has unique electronic characteristics that identify it just like a fingerprint is used to identify a person. The CTS system uses these characteristics to validate customers and deny cloned phones from even connecting to the network.

"Cellular One takes aggressive measures to fight fraud and this system gives us another powerful weapon in our arsenal. We are the first wireless communications provider in the Greater Bay Area to activate such an advanced system and it underscores our commitment to protecting our customers," said Tim Long, manager of Cellular One's Risk Management Department. "This new system enables us to proactively deny criminals from using our network."

Digital and Analog Customers to Benefit

All of Cellular One's customers -- both analog and digital -- will be automatically protected from the fraudulent use of their wireless phone number.
