Cell Computing Adds USB Support for Pentium CardPC; Credit-Card-Sized PCs feature USB at Embedded Systems Booth 106.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 1999--Cell Computing, Inc., manufacturer of the CardPC(TM) micro-motherboard -- industry's smallest Pentium processor motherboard, today announced a new Universal Serial Bus (USB) expansion capability. The new 233 MHz CardPC systems feature the low-power 233 MHz Intel mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology, and now offer full support for UHCI USB with transfer rates of 12 Mbits/sec. USB is also available with the Cell Computing Mighty Mite ISA-based single-board computer.

USB enables CardPC-based designs to be even smaller, compatible with hardware from over 500 companies, and easier to configure -- no DIP switches, IRQ settings, COM ports, or DMA channels need to be changed for USB peripherals."

P233 CardPC Features

The newest member of the CardPC family is a credit-card-sized AT-compatible ISA motherboard that supports 233 MHz Intel Pentium processors with MMX technology. The complete system consists of a mobile Pentium CPU, Intel chipset, Trident Cyber9320 PCI graphics controller with 1 MByte VRAM, National Semiconductor Super I/O chip, two serial ports, one parallel port, one USB port, up to 128 MBytes of DRAM, industry-standard Phoenix BIOS with power management features, and interfaces for LCD and CRT.

The entire micro-motherboard measures just 85.6 x 54 x 12.7 mm (3.4 x 2.1 x 0.5 inches) and dissipates under 9.5 Watts. The CardPC P233 scores 263 on the CPUMark16 and 234 on the CPUMark32 benchmarks.

Typical applications for Cell Computing CardPCs include ruggedized notebooks and tablets, wearable PCs, portable test equipment, aircraft instrumentation, network-based equipment control, compact embedded Web servers, and other systems requiring full compatibility with popular desktop operating systems like Windows 95, 98, CE, NT, and Linux. The CardPC is also supported by real-time operating systems from Microware, VenturCom, Integrated Systems, Lynx, Phar Lap, and others.

Pricing and Availability

233 MHz CardPC micro-motherboards with USB are available immediately. Pricing in quantities of 10,000 for 233 MHz Pentium processor CardPCs is $499. The new CardPCs are fully compatible with Cell Computing single-board computers and development tools, including the 4 x 5.75 inch Mighty Mite single-board computer.
