Celibacy: Gift or Law? A Critical Examination.

The debate about celibacy is certain not to abate during this pontificate. Heinz-Jurgen Vogels looks for rapid and major change in Celibacy. Gift or law? A Critical Examination (Sheed & Ward, 138 pages, $12.95 paperback).

A German theologian suspended from the priesthood after his 1979 marriage, Vogels looks toward the "legitimate desire that papal authority grant the sacrament of marriage to priests who have not yet received the charism of celibacy." He suggests that the fear "that sexuality freed from prohibition could destroy church structures" be tempered by faith that the grace of marriage "will channel the forces of nature."
