Celebrating CTE Success.
T.C. WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS, INCLUDING ACTE'S 2020 NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR,
Kimberly Wilson, graciously hosted the staff of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) for its annual CTE Month site visit on Feb. 20, 2020, in Alexandria, Virginia. Branch Chief Robin Utz and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges Casey Sacks in the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education were also in attendance at the big event.
The event included welcoming remarks by JROTC students and representatives, opening ceremonies featuring a CTE student panel, and remarks by Carmen Sanders, principal of T.C. Williams Academy; LeAnn Wilson, ACTE executive director; Tricia Jacobs and Gerald Mann, Alexandria City Public Schools; and CTE student panel moderator Jarrod Nagurka, ACTE advocacy and public affairs manager.
During the panel discussion, students emphasized the essential role their CTE classes played in cultivating employability and leadership skills, including:
* Developing effective communication skills
* Having access to work-based learning opportunities
* Being involved in career and technical student organizations
* Building community and networks with students and mentors sharing similar career goals
* Honing specific career skills
* Fostering greater student openness to both new ideas and diversity
Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to tour the impressive array of facilities and programs, including Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Cyber-Networking, Engineering-Robotics, Health and Medical, Marketing, Photography-Graphic Design, School Store-Credit Union, Technical Drawing,
TV Production, and Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow/Early Childhood.
