Celebrate Midwives' Day May 5.

The World Health Organization has proclaimed May 5 to be International Midwives' Day. Start planning now to make midwifery more visible in your community. Suggestions include film showings, pres releases, and panel discussions featuring midwives and clients. Let us know that you do, so we can publicize it next year! Here is an example of what women did in 1991.

Meet the Midwives

"In honor of International Midwives Day, a recently organized group, Central New Hampshire Friends of Midwives, is hosting an informational event May 2 at 7 p.m. at the Concord Public Library on Green Street.

"Introducing Midwifery" will present several area midwives and some of their clients in a question-and-answer session. A short movie will also be shown illustrating the midwife-assisted birthing experience. The program is free.

The certified midwives of the panel include: Susan Bartlett of The Concord Midwifery Service, Valerie Jacques of Alternative Birth Association, Chris Kuhlman of OB-Gyn Unlimited Professional Association, and Linda Limburg and Carol Kozikowski of Women's Health Care Association.

Friends of Midwives is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and information on midwife care. The group seeks to raise public awareness, provide educational opportunities for parents and parents-to-be, help midwives attain the status of a recognized, self-regulating profession, and encourage insurers to recognize and compensate midwives as providers of prenatal and childbirth care.

The group meets the third Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in Concord. For more information, call Mary Faiella (603 942-5582), Karen Lavoie (603 736-4667), Donna MacKenzie (603 783-4211) or Monica Stevens (603 934-3778)."--Concord Monitor, May 1991.
