Catnappers.

Here is a stunt you will enjoy.

What is a catnapper? It is a mean, nasty person who tries to steal kittens. It is your job to keep that from happening!

Preparation:

Make a photocopy of the artwork on the next page. Paste it onto index cards and cut out the six kitten cards and the two catnapper cards. Fold each card in half so that the picture is on the inside. When the folded cards are standing, you cannot see whether the card is a kitten card or a catnapper card. Make a very light pencil mark on the back of each of the catnapper cards. Always keep these sides toward you and the marks will not be noticed by anyone but you. Now you will know which cards are catnapper cards.

Make two screens out of poster board. When the sides are folded, the screens will stand upright. Draw bushes on them with colored markers.

When you put the folded cards behind the screens, your friends cannot see how many are there.

Set up:

Place one screen to the left and the other screen to the right, as shown. The six kitten cards and the two catnapper cards are on the table between the two screens.

Presentation:

These instructions must be followed exactly.

"Have you ever heard of catnappers?" you ask. "They look like this." Show what the catnappers look like and refold them. "They are mean, nasty people who try to steal kittens. Two of them were sneaking around my yard. One of them is hiding over here..." Lift up the left screen so your friends can see there is nothing there. Put one of the catnapper cards there and set the screen back down, hiding it. "And one is hiding here." Put the other behind the right screen.

"I have six kittens." Show the six kitten cards. Refold them, and set them on the table in a bunch.

"When my back was turned, the catnappers grabbed my kittens." With the left hand, put one kitten card behind the left screen. Then with the fight hand put a kitten card behind the fight screen, one behind the left screen, one behind the right screen, and one behind the left screen. This leaves one kitten card on the table.

"Then I saw them. 'Hey, put those kittens back!' I yelled. They did, quickly." With the RIGHT hand, put one kitten card back from behind the right screen. With the left hand, put one kitten card back from behind the left screen. Now, with the right hand, put the catnapper card from behind the right screen back like it was a kitten card. You can tell it is the catnapper card because of the pencil mark. Do the same thing with the left catnapper card. Put the last kitten card from behind the right screen back. This leaves two kitten cards behind the left screen and no cards behind the right screen. Your friends do not know this.

"Well, when I wasn't looking, those mean, nasty old catnappers started stealing my kittens again." With the left hand, take a kitten card and put it behind the left screen. With the right hand, take a catnapper card (you can see the pencil mark) and put it behind the right screen. Put another kitten card behind the left screen. Put the other catnapper card behind the right screen. Put another kitten card behind the left screen. This leaves one kitten card on the table.

"'Hey, what are you mean, old nasty catnappers doing?' I yelled. They quickly grabbed my last kitten." Take the last kitten card and put it behind the left screen.

"I called the police. You can always count on them. When they showed up, they caught those two catnappers." Move the right screen to show the two catnapper cards. Open them up to show the pic tures of the catnappers. "My kittens were all together, safe and sound." Move the left screen and show the six kitten cards.
