Catholics of Uzbekistan hold annual congress in Tashkent.

Former Secretary of Pope John Paul II, Archbishop of Lviv Mieczys?aw Mokrzycki visited Uzbekistan on June 7-8. These days the ?atholics of Uzbekistan held an annual congress in Tashkent.

"I am very glad I was able to visit your community that meets annually to become stronger in faith and feel unity in the Holy Spirit," the Archbishop said.

The congress was mainly devoted to canonization of John Paul II this year. His cause for canonization commenced in 2005 one month after his death with the traditional five-year waiting period waived. On 19 December 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI and was beatified on 1 May 2011 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease.

First Catholic communities were formed in Uzbekistan by the exiled Poles and Lithuanians. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, they obtained legal status.
