Catholic universities host Vagina Monologues. (Endnotes).
DESPITE PRESSURE FROM CONSERVATIVE Catholic groups, the majority of Catholic universities that planned performances of Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues decided to host the play. A small number, including Xavier University in Cincinnati, Gonzaga University in Seattle, and Iona College and the College of New Rochelle, both independent Catholic colleges in New York, withdrew permission for the play. However, at Xavier, university authorities allowed the play to take place in a class instead of the theater.Students and faculty at 656 colleges worldwide requested the rights to present the play in February and March, 2003. Some 35 of those were Catholic institutions in the US. At least 28 US Catholic colleges showed the play last year. The play celebrates female sexuality while decrying violence against women.
