Catholic doctor's pounds 20k win.

A CATHOLIC doctor who claimed religious discrimination after being turned down for a consultant's post received pounds 20,000 compensation, it emerged yesterday.

Even though the Ulster Hospital admitted no liability, Colm McGurk, from Belfast, was awarded the cash in a fair employment settlement reached before tribunal.

The Ulster Community and Hospitals Trust accepted there were deficiencies in its practices and procedures.

It also confirmed Dr McGurk, 39, was suitable for appointment when he first applied for the consultant physician post in the General Medicine Department of the East Belfast hospital in 2001.

As part of the agreement the Trust apologised for injury to feelings and hurt and distress caused.
