Catherine Shaughnessy.

TOWNSEND - Catherine M. Shaughnessy, 51, formerly of Howard Street, died from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease.

Ms. Shaughnessy attended public schools in both Townsend and Pepperell. She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Townsend and a member of the folk group. She also volunteered at the Senior Center in Townsend. For many years, she was an active participant in the ARC Drop-In Club and the Beacon of Hope.

She worked 19 years for Market Basket, retiring in 2008.

She made her television debut on the "Good Day Show" in 1985, when she was interviewed for the upcoming Winter International Special Olympics, held in Park City, Utah. She was also featured on the cover of Business Digest magazine. She went on to win a bronze medal in the cross-country skiing event.

Ms. Shaughnessy was born on April 30, 1961, in Fitchburg. She is the daughter of the late John J. and Barbara M. (Gannon) Shaughnessy Sr. and lived 46 years in Townsend.

She is survived by four sisters, Mary K. and husband, Robert Whitaker, of Lunenburg, Maureen E. and husband, Kevin O'Loughlin, of Lancaster, Ann M. and husband, Michael Romano. of Fitchburg, and Barbara M. Shaughnessy of Fitchburg; and two brothers, John J. Shaughnessy Jr. of New Hampshire and Florida and Mark E. Shaughnessy and wife, Donna, of Winchendon. She was predeceased by a brother, Michael P. Shaughnessy, in 2006 and a sister, Eileen M. Shaughnessy, in 1960.

Ms. Shaughnessy could often be seen around town riding her bike, wearing her Walkman, instead of her helmet; socializing at the band concerts; playing tennis; stopping in for a doughnut at Cliff's Donut Shop; shooting hoops in the yard on Howard Street; and telling a tale or two along the way.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. John's Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster.
