Catatonia are restless.

There was a time when the roll-call of Welsh pop stars ended after Tom Jones and Shakin' Stevens.

But these days the principality churns out top bands like New Zealand churns out butter.

And the latest to crack the singles chart are Cardiff quintet Catatonia.

The band have already had two minor hits with You've Got A Lot To Answer For and I Am The Mob. Now they look set to enter the big league with their X-Files-inspired single, Mulder And Scully.

"It's about asking Mulder and Scully to investigate this thing called love," says singer Cerys Matthews, who, somewhat oddly, isn't really a fan of the TV show. "I just like the concept of two people going round the planet investigating odd phenomena, in this case love."

With an album due in February and a tour next month, we're likely to be hearing a lot more from Catatonia.

Catatonia tour dates: Jan 7, Tenby Pavilions; 10, Sheffield Leadmill; 14, Liverpool Krazyhouse; 15, Nottingham Rock City; 17, Middlesborough Arena; 18, Wolverhampton Wulfren Hall; 19, Cambridge Junction; 21, Buckley Tivoli; 24, Oxford Zodiac; 26, Exeter Uni; 27, Cardiff Uni; 29, Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms; 30, Brighton Pavilion; Feb. 1, Port Talbot Princes Theatre; 3, Norwich Waterfront; 5, London Electric Ballroom.
