Cash cows in wind.

SIR - I find that in the UK Electricity Generation Energy Debate, the arguments generally take place over nuclear and wind power.

I am fascinated that, contrary to national opinion polls, local public opinion polls are heavily in favour of nuclear and heavily against wind power.

The locals know that a nuclear power station cannot explode like an atom bomb.

They know that radioactivity emitted from nuclear stations is, by law, way below the natural radiations of everyday life such as air travel, some foods, sun bathing, X-rays, etc.

They know that the waste from a nuclear station, when shielded and contained, zeroes any radioactive emission.

They also know that highly radioactive radon gas is naturally emitted from granite outcrops, such as in Devon and Cornwall, and has been since the beginning of time.

Locals quickly realise that with wind power, no credible technical argument remains for its use in the UK Electricity Supply Industry.

In my opinion, the only reason left for wind farms is that of political cash cows. We, the electricity consumers, deposit our payments in the cash cows whilst the wind farm developers, land owners and certain farming interests, happily withdraw our money from what they see as their golden geese!
