Casella Waste Systems announces $2.9 million loss on rising income.

Casella Waste Systems Inc. says losses remained steady as income rose during the first quarter of the company's fiscal year. Casella is based in Rutland, Vt.,

For the three months ended July 31, the firm lost $2.9 million, or 11 cents per share, on revenue of $139.8 million. That compares with a loss of $2.8 million, or 11 cents per share, on revenue of $132.5 million for the previous first quarter.

"Entering the second quarter we completed the implementation of a systematic customer-by-customer profitability analysis to more effectively target pricing and we adopted sales commission structures to drive implementation," said CEO John Casella, adding that these steps are expected to improve solid waste pricing to get back on track to meet fiscal year pricing objectives.
