Cascade: the forgotten park.

THE CASCADE SKATEPARK, or Cascade as it was known to most, was a pay-to-skate facility on the outskirts of Baltimore. The park's short-lived heyday was in the late 1970s, when ECTT (East Coast Toke Team) was there riding the keyhole bowl and skating the concrete vert ramp. A majority of the park fell victim to bulldozers in the 1980s, and what remains---a mellow sort of boxing-glove-shaped bowl with a rounded lip--has lain dormant and in disrepair since. Few have been lucky enough to ride after the park shut down. The current landowner has been making sure of that by throwing telephone poles, truck tires, and thick steel plates into the bowl. Luckily for us, he underestimated our determination.

After catching word of an abandoned bowl in the woods of Maryland, I convinced a friend in the area to take me. Despite his assurance that the park was filled with shit I needed a look myself. Two months later a crew of six from Boston, one Baltimore transplant, and three from the Washington DC area all came together. I'm sure everyone knew we'd gotten in over our heads after starting, but at that point it was too late. When you drive seven hours to skate something, a few waterlogged telephone poles can't stop you. Sometime during the clean-up the owner figured out what we were doing and made repeated calls to the police to have us removed. Eventually a cop showed up and escorted us off the property, but five hours of clean-up for a couple hours of shredding was definitely worth it There's still plenty to be done before it's completely empty. Next time we're bringing a chainsaw.

How many of more of these are out there?
