Cartland in the pink to pip Madonna.

The late Birmingham-born author Dame Barbara Cartland has beaten pop queen Madonna to the number one slot - in the puppet stakes.

The Spitting Image model of the late Edgbaston-born romantic fiction writer beat Madonna's latex double to pole position at auction yesterday.

Dame Barbara's 71cm-tall model, complete with her trademark Pekinese puppy, was the joint top-seller in the sell-off of Spitting Image lots at Sotheby's Olympia in London, fetching pounds 3,290 - nearly five times the sum she was expected to raise.

She shared top spot with the model of former American footballer and actor, O J Simpson, who was cleared of murdering his wife in a trial screened live on worldwide TV.

Madonna's puppet, which was tipped to be the top seller, sold for pounds 1,292.

Following closely behind the feathered Dame were James Bond film stars Roger Moore and Sean Connery who sold for pounds 2,937 each; ice dancing duo Torvill and Dean, who made pounds 2,820, and a Press Pig, which fetched pounds 2,937. Former Tory Prime Minister John Major fetched pounds 2,702.

The whole sale raised pounds 157,385, which will go to Spitting Image Productions.
