Cars help gets retired seamen on the move.

DAME Lorna Muirhead, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside and patron of North West Port Welfare Committee, accepted two minibuses and a car on behalf of the Maritime Charities Funding Group (MCFG) yesterday.

They were handed over by Peter Tomlin, of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, at Liverpool Seafarers Centre, in Crosby.

The vehicles, costing pounds 46,000, were largely funded by MCFG.

They will be used to link the port with the Liverpool Seafarers Centre.

A new national telephone service has also been launched on Merseyside for thousands of seafarers and their families in need of help. The Seafarer Support freephone referral service is a confidential telephone line which will direct callers to the best charity or agency to deal with their problems.

The Seafarer Support service, operated by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board is available by ringing 0800 121 4765.
