Carry on caravanning; PICK OF THE DAY CARAVANNER OF THE YEAR BBC2, 8PM.

Byline: today's tv With Sara Wallis

NLY in Britain could this be a bonafide competition. What will they come up with next? o But while you may chortle at the idea, trust me the contestants of this, the inaugural Caravanner of the Year, take it very seriously indeed.

Over two tough days, six top enthusiasts, all members of the Caravan Club, battle it out to win the much coveted trophy.

It's pitched (sorry) as a "highly-charged contest", which might be slightly over-egging the pudding. The biggest drama might be when someone's caravan gets stuck in a ditch (fingers crossed).

However it is always amusing to watch someone struggle to put up a tent, or in this case, awning.

The contest is judged by "caravanning aristocracy" Grenville Chamberlain (chairman of the club), Andy Harris (motorhome maverick and journalist), and guest judge Lucy Jayne Grout, who restores vintage caravans.

They are after spirit level precision as they begin with an awning assembly speed trial. An awning, we learn, is called "divorce-in-a-bag", and everyone begins bickering on cue while the judges inspect their work.

"I don't like droopy bits," says Grenville, uttering just one of many innuendos.

But Andy wants even more excitement in the manoeuvring challenge.

"I want a bit of spice in my life," he says, eyeing up a slight incline.

Well it's not exactly Top Gear, but someone does come unstuck.

VW And that's before they all have to attempt the figure-of-eightobstacle course. And then, without so much as five minutes for a cup of tea and a custard cream, it's straight into the Concours D'Elegance for some competitive polishing and primping for a place in the final.

Caravanning doesn't get tougher than this.
