Carr finishes top veteran; Cycling.
The Park End rider was part of a field of 50 who tackled the main senior event of three races in unusually warm January weather on a new course at Hardwick's East Park. Kenny Haswell of Blackhawk Bikes pulled out an immediate lead and held it throughout the race to finish well clear of team-mate Colin Ash.
The remaining top 10 places were closely fought on a course which rode very fast and a group of riders lapping consistently together made for an exciting race.
Tom Stockill of Malton Wheelers finished third in the Ferryhill Wheelers promotion, with top junior Scott Gerrard fourth.
In the youth race, held on the full 1.5 mile course set out for the seniors, a field of nine settled down into three groups fairly quickly, with Elliot Davison of Hetton Hawks finishing two minutes clear of Joe Howard, Joe Mann and Finlay Robertson. Another Hetton Hawks rider, Nick Hamilton, led an entry of 24 riders from start to finish to win the Under-12s race.
The race was the seventh in the eight-round North East Cyclo Cross League, which concludes at Hetton Lyons Country Park on Sunday, January 29.
Result: 1, Kenny Haswell (Blackhawk Bikes) 49min 18sec; 2, Colin Ash (Blackhawk Bikes); 3, Tom Stockill (Malton Wheelers); 4, Scott Gerrard; 5, Darren Binks (Blackhawk Bikes); 6, Vince Potter (Blackhawk Bikes); 7, John Davison (Cestria RT); 8, Andy Moss (Adept Precision); 9, Mark Reed (Tyneside Vagabonds); 10, John Carr (Cleveland Wheelers).
