Carpenter's single lifts Marshfield.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Scott Carpenter singled to right with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to score Michael Bell from second, giving Marshfield a 5-4 Midwestern League baseball victory at Thurston on Wednesday.

Ricky Rexine struck out 13 to pick up the victory for the Pirates, who moved to 2-2 in league play. Darrell Hunter had two hits and two RBIs for the Colts.

Jacob Franke belted a two-run home run in the first inning and Aaron Greer was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs as North Eugene beat host Willamette 9-4 in a Midwestern League game.

Dan Winterstein added three hits for the Highlanders, who improved to 3-1 in league. Ricky Gunderson had two hits and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, for Willamette.

Jason Schroeder had three hits and four RBIs to lead Umpqua Valley Christian to a 7-2 Big Fir League victory over North Douglas.

Anthony Shaw went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for North Douglas.

Beau Biron and Brandt Thissell combined to toss a no-hitter, lifting Waldport to a 14-3 Trico League victory at Harrisburg.

Softball

Ashley Likens struck out eight and allowed two unearned runs in a five-inning no-hitter as North Eugene defeated visiting Willamette 15-2 in a Midwestern League game.

Likens was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs for the Highlanders, who improved to 3-0 in league play. Ashley Ficek was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Denee Johnson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Annee McHarry added three hits and an RBI.

Amanda Miller allowed two hits and two unearned runs in five innings to lead Thurston to a 12-2 Midwestern League victory over visiting Marshfield.

Miller, who hasn't allowed an earned run this season, finished with six strikeouts and two walks. Darrah King was 2-for-4 with a two-run double, and McKenzie Morgan and Cotie Howard each added two hits and an RBI for the Colts (3-1 league).

Melissa Powell was 2-for-2 and Megan Keen had the game-winning RBI to lead Harrisburg to a 3-2 Trico League victory over visiting Waldport.

Boys track and field

Jeff Randall, Matt Fitzgerald and Aaron McVein won two events apiece to lead Sheldon to a 95 1/2 -49 1/2 Midwestern Leauge dual victory over visiting Springfield.

The Irish's 4x100-meter relay team won in 43.6 seconds, the third-best recorded time in the state this season. Springfield's Adam Koekkoek won the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

Girls track and field

Caitlin Ritchey, Amy Nelson and Emmy Greatwood won two events each as Sheldon swept all 16 events in a 124-21 victory over visiting Springfield in a Midwestern League dual meet.

Notable performances included Lisette Peterson's 12.5-second victory in the 100-meter dash and Greatwood's discus throw of 106 feet, 4 inches.

Girls golf

Marshfield's Beka Young shot an 84 to earn medalist honors while leading the Pirates to the team title with a total round of 376 at McKenzie River Golf Course.

Sophie Elstrott shot an 86 to lead South Eugene, which was second at 413.

Girls tennis

Jessica Gorman, Whitney Lewis and Rachel Hutchinson each won their singles matches to lift Thurston to a 6-2 Midwestern League victory over visiting Willamette.

Lacrosse

Danny Gunderson had three goals and Sam Weston recorded 10 saves as Churchill defeated Roseburg 10-3. Drew Watts added two goals for the Lancers, Matt Booth had a goal and three assists, and Matt Paeschke had 12 ground balls.
