Caroline's vision travil[...].

SCOTTISH-BASED Caroline Jones Carrick is the frontwoman for TEV (Tracked Electrical Vehicle) - an electric vehicle transport infrastructure.

This month, she addressed the Federal Highway Administration in the USA about the concept developed by her father.

This would use an electric lane on the motorway - or one developed independently - to send autonomous electric vehicles hurtling from city to city in convoy at about 120mph.

The lane would use electricity to power the cars and they would be charged as they go by electric pads underneath.

Because the lane would be enclosed, inclement weather such as snow or rain would have no impact, nor would pedestrians or animals be able to get on the track.

It would be operated by computer, which would allow the cars to travel at high speed.

Caroline said: "We believe this lane could take 10 times the traffic on a lane at the moment.

"Other, heavier vehicles, such as trucks and buses, would use the remaining lanes, allowing the cars to travel rapidly and with no emissions.

"We also believe we could build these lanes for the same price a normal motorway would be built. In terms of US dollars, that is $2million per mile."

The electric lane would be a toll road that would pay for its construction and running costs, and cars would come off at the other end, switch to driver mode and go on to their detination.

The lane would take all types of electric vehicles from all manufactruers, allowing TEV to attrract a range of investors to the technology.

Experts agree that this kind of highway is seen as the way forward.

At the moment, electric buses in Milton Keynes are charged each time they halt at a bus stop by an electric induction pad that they hover over.

The TEV project would also use this type of technology as part of a much wider piece of construction.
