Caroler's night-light and glowing centerpieces ... with simple cutout stars.

Make stars your theme this season with candle ornaments you can take caroling or add to a Christmas centerpiece. Star collars on caroling candles keep wax off hands; gold centerpiece ornaments reflect chafing-dish candles' gentle flames.

For materials, you'll need paper for pattern, medium-weight bristol board (preferably gold or silver), chafing-dish candies or caroling candles of your choice, and glitter. You should also have on hand a ruler, pencil, scissors, and a small craft knife.

First, enlarge the pattern onto paper; then at the center of the star, draw a hole small enough to fit snugly around the candle you will use. Cut out star perimeter and center hole.

Using the pattern as a guide, outline as many stars as you need on the bristol board. Cut around star's perimeter, then score circle with a dull knife. With the craft knife, divide circle into sixteenths, as shown in drawing above right; push V-shaped prongs down, snipping points off for chafing-dish candle collars. For caroling candles, slip collar onto candle, prongs facing down, and position it to leave a hand hold. For chafing-dish candles, push them down into stars, sprinkle candles with glitter, and light.
