Carole Malone column: BUTT OUT, CPS.

Byline: Carole Malone

CAN anyone explain to me why the Crown Prosecution Service exists, other than to throw taxpayers' money down the toilet?

Graham Davies - a teacher with a 30-year unblemished record - has had to suffer the indignity of being dragged into court by some toe-rag pupil who accused him of head-butting him.

This is a pupil whose disciplinary record at his Devon comprehensive amounts to 88 pages, who has been described as "every teacher's nightmare," and who once brought a knife into class and threatened classmates. The case cost pounds 10,000 to bring to court , Mr Davies has not been able to teach since last December, and has suffered threats from the boy's equally loutish father. Thankfully, the allegation has now been thrown out, but the question remains: Why do decent, hardworking teachers have to be destroyed on the word of some lying no-mark 15-year-old?

It's time this Government took a long hard look at the CPS to find out why its employees seem totally devoid of common sense - and why they're behaving like politically correct cowards who'd rather wreck a distinguished man's career than tell a 15-year-old yob and his bullying father to shove off.
