Care worker: 'Strike is a last resort'.

GEORGINA Roberts and her colleagues, who look after elderly and vulnerable people in their homes, are among the thousands of Unison members going on strike.

The 46-year-old, of Eider Close, St Mellons, Cardiff, who has been a home carer for 12 years, earns S6.57 an hour - SI.05 above the minimum wage for an adult - and said the 2.45% pay offer would leave her with just pounds 10.80 extra a month after tax.

"We are dealing with terminally ill people and people with other serious illnesses, including multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy," she said.

"We use specialist equipment, we do their shopping, we do their housework and enable them to live independently and in 12 years our money has gone up by S2.13 an hour. Nobody wants to come out on strike, it is a last resort. But people want to be able to make ends meet and they can't any more on this sort of salary."

RCT and Merthyr Tydfil

Refuse collections may be disrupted. A spokesman said: "The council's Streetcare team are expecting to collect waste as normal, but are warning residents and businesses throughout the county borough the service could be severely disrupted over this period if staff are on strike. Refuse collections and recycling collections may not take place on either day.

Therefore the waste will not be collected until the following week."

No details as yet as to how the strike will affect other services.

The Echo asked Merthyr Tydfil council to provide information, but did not receive a response.
