Care needed when taking on extremists; Views of Wales.

SIR - I must admit I share Brian Christley's (WM, December 18) dislike of religious fanatics, particularly following the horrifying events in Pakistan this week.

However, I find his solution a bit extreme, particularly as it advocates indiscriminate violence as a solution.

To start with, not all religious fanatics are violent or advocate violence; some may be seen as harmless eccentrics, particularly if they hold a similar faith to our own.

Furthermore, when legitimate governments resort to excessive and disproportionate violence, they can end up making matters worse.

It is sad fact that in the 14 years since George W Bush declared war on terrorism on behalf of the United States, a far more powerful political force than the United Nations, the problem has got worse!
