Cardinal Sinn loses potency.

Pictures of Martin McGuinness in white tie and tails toasting the Queen make me ask why Sinn Fein's five MPs continue refusing to take the parliamentary oath of loyalty.

There are few more demeaning acts of fealty than an ex-IRA boss raising a glass to the monarch in Windsor Castle.

Until this jaw-dropping event, I thought the oath should be dropped. But it now seems completely irrelevant, and the "Shinners" should swear it to represent their Northern Ireland constituents properly.

They take the pay and the expenses, have offices and hold meetings in the Palace of Westminster. They might as well go the whole hog, as well as eating it.
