As is widely appreciated, carbon dioxide plays a crucial role in numerous biological systems and is now intensively studied with respect to global climatic changes. It is also an important ingredient in many industrial processes: typically, the synthesis of salicylic acid (leading to aspirin) and efficient routes to ethylene carbonate (ultimately giving polyurethanes) are examples of large-scale [CO.sup.2] usage. This book describes the activation of carbon dioxide by metal complexes thus yielding synthetic pathways to carboxylic acids, esters, lactones, etc. In a well-organized fashion, the author provides information on both stoichiometric and catalytic processes. The diversity of [CO.sup.2] chemistry is astonishing to one not currently active in this field. This reviewer's personal preferences involve the reports by many workers concerning the reactions of carbon dioxide with hydrocarbons bonded to low oxidation state transition metals. Several elegant mechanistic studies are clearly described. Overall, the book makes fascinating reading and covers the literature to approximately 1987.

In terms of readability and presentation, there are a few examples of Gerglish, eg., ist selected, decoffeinated, and the occasional und, but generally the text and diagrams are excellent. The sole problem is the price: at $98 for 160 pages a cheaper paperback issue would be welcome.
