Car sales surge by 36.4% in Indonesia.

Car sales in the country shot up 36.4% to a new peak of 483,317 units from 354,331 units in 2003. The motor vehicle association said the sales exceeds the target of 450,000 units, already revised upward from 385,000 traits set earlier to 400,000 and then to 425,000 units. Association chairman Freddy Sutrisk said sales were strong alter the successful presidential election, the first direct presidential election in the country in 2004. Freddy said production of new models also contributed to the surge in sales. Toyota has continued to lead in market followed by Mitsubishi and Suzuki. Other major brands are Daihatsu, Honda and Isuzu. (BI/11/01/05)
