Car boot going cheep.

Browned-off birdman Graham Lowe was feeling chirpy again yesterday.

He was sick as a parrot after his collection of prize parakeets was stolen.

But police swooped just hours later at a routine road check.

They found the birds crammed into sacks in the boot of a car at Bootle, Merseyside.

The parakeets were rushed to a hospital unit at Southport Zoo, where they recovered.

Graham, of Byley, Middlewich, Cheshire, had built up the collection over 20 years and the birds are worth around pounds 10,000.

One was lost during the theft and another died after returning to the aviary on his farm.

Police said a man was helping them with their inquiries.
